CABO VERDE

It was in the 15th century when Portuguese sailors first discovered the islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. They were seen as an ideal base for establishing trade routes with West Africa. Settlements were built on the then-uninhabited islands, followed by a dark chapter of slavery. After periods of unrest, Cape Verde finally gained independence from its colonial power Portugal in 1975.

Emigrants—especially to the USA, Portugal, and Brazil—helped ensure that the island nation would not be forgotten. Iconic musicians like Cesária Évora, Ildo Lobo, Tito Paris, and others, along with the rise of tourism, have contributed significantly to the country's growing international presence.

Today, Cape Verde is a self-reliant island nation with a democratic government. Despite challenging climatic conditions, recurring droughts, and a lack of export resources, the country has managed to grow into a functioning economy—thanks to the determination, courage, innovation, and resilience of its people.
